Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focus on realigning deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Deep tissue massage uses some of the same strokes as Swedish massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper, concentrating on areas of tension and pain (e.g., back/neck/shoulders).
Due to the extra attention and effort required in areas of greatest need a one-hour deep tissue massage may not address the entire body. It may target only a specific area such as the back, neck, and shoulders or the legs and hips.
